Average Wine Price in Italy Reaches $4.0 per Liter after Months of Increase

Italy Wine Export Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the wine price stood at $4.0 per litre (FOB, Italy), flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average export price increased by 7.2% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4.3 per litre in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to January 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($6.1 per litre), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($2.2 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Italy Wine Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied somewhat for the major types of exported product. In January 2023, the product with the highest price was sparkling wine ($5.0 per litre), while the average price for exports of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) totaled $3.7 per litre.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: sparkling wine (+1.2%).

Italy Wine Exports

In January 2023, shipments abroad of wine decreased by -20.8% to 134M litres, falling for the second consecutive month after three months of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 with an increase of 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 217M litres in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to January 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine exports shrank rapidly to $536M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 28% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 848M litres in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to January 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy Wine Exports by Type

Wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (106M litres) was the largest type of wine exported from Italy, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the volume of the second product type, sparkling wine (28M litres), fourfold.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest.

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($395M) remains the largest type of wine exported from Italy, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sparkling wine ($141M), with a 26% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest.

Italy Wine Exports by Country

Germany (36M litres), the United States (23M litres) and the UK (12M litres) were the main destinations of wine exports from Italy, with a combined 53% share of total exports. France, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Russia, the Czech Republic and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the biggest increases were in the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wine exported from Italy were the United States ($134M), Germany ($93M) and the UK ($46M), with a combined 51% share of total exports. Switzerland, Canada, France, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

France, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
