South Africa Copper Pipe And Fitting Exports

For the third year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in overseas shipments of copper tubes, pipes and fitting, which increased by 0.2% to 7.7K tons in 2023. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. The exports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, copper pipe and fitting exports reduced to $75M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Exports by Country

the United Arab Emirates (3.8K tons) was the main destination for copper pipe and fitting exports from South Africa, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, copper pipe and fitting exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zimbabwe (626 tons), sixfold. Saudi Arabia (450 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.8% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+1.8% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+20.3% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($40M) remains the key foreign market for copper tubes, pipes and fitting exports from South Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($4.6M), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+21.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (+6.7% per year).

Exports by Type

Tubes and pipes of refined copper (5.9K tons) was the largest type of copper tubes, pipes and fitting exported from South Africa, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, tubes and pipes of refined copper exceeded the volume of the second product type, tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (545 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (509 tons), with a 6.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of tubes and pipes of refined copper exports totaled +3.4%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (+6.8% per year) and tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (+4.0% per year).

In value terms, tubes and pipes of refined copper ($61M) remains the largest type of copper tubes, pipes and fitting exported from South Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver ($4.8M), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys, with a 5.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of tubes and pipes of refined copper exports stood at +5.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: tubes and pipes of copper alloys other than copper-zinc, cupro-nickel or nickel-silver (+7.7% per year) and tube or pipe fittings, couplings, elbows, sleeves of copper alloys (+2.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the copper pipe and fitting price stood at $9,733 per ton (FOB, South Africa), falling by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, copper pipe and fitting export price increased by +55.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $10,049 per ton in 2022, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($11,424 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($5,718 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
