Caramel Price in Belgium (FOB) - 2023
The average caramel export price stood at $1,553 per ton in June 2023, which is down by -4.9% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a measured expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, caramel export price decreased by -4.9% against May 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 34% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,633 per ton in May 2023, and then contracted slightly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,382 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($1,056 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Price in Belgium (CIF) - 2023
The average caramel import price stood at $1,098 per ton in June 2023, surging by 26% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 101% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,530 per ton. From February 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,101 per ton), while the price for China ($708 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Exports in Belgium
For the fourth consecutive year, Belgium recorded growth in overseas shipments of caramel, which increased by 3% to 100K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, caramel exports expanded significantly to $129M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
