In value terms, chromium ore and concentrate production reduced to $5.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum level at $7.5B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of chromium ore and concentrate production was South Africa (18M tons), accounting for 42% of total volume. Moreover, chromium ore and concentrate production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (7.5M tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kazakhstan (7M tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa totaled +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+8.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.0% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Chromium Ores and Concentrates

Global chromium ore and concentrate imports fell notably to 17M tons in 2022, which is down by -25.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 24M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chromium ore and concentrate imports expanded markedly to $4.1B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. In value terms, China ($3.5B) constitutes the largest market for imported chromium ores and concentrates worldwide, comprising 85% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($163M), with a 4% share of global imports.
