Spice Price in the United Arab Emirates (CIF) - 2022
The average spice import price stood at $3,262 per ton in 2022, declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $3,787 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($9,611 per ton), while the price for Russia ($818 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spice Price in the United Arab Emirates (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average spice export price amounted to $2,785 per ton, shrinking by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spice export price decreased by -14.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $3,248 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($4,545 per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($403 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+24.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spice Imports in the United Arab Emirates
In 2022, overseas purchases of spices decreased by -20.4% to 162K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year.
In value terms, spice imports dropped notably to $528M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 28%.
