In 2023, Kenya (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the major exporters of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Africa, together accounting for near X% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by South Africa (X%). Senegal (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2023, overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Djibouti was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for X% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Central African Republic (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Mali (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Djibouti decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Nigeria (X%), Central African Republic (X%), Mali (X%), Benin (X%), Mauritania (X%), South Africa (X%), Mozambique (X%), Kenya (X%) and Cabo Verde (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Madagascar (X%), Botswana (X%) and Namibia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Central African Republic (X p.p.), Benin (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.), South Africa (X p.p.), Mauritania (X p.p.), Nigeria (X p.p.), Mali (X p.p.), Cabo Verde (X p.p.) and Kenya (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Botswana (X p.p.), Djibouti (X p.p.) and Namibia (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Djibouti ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with an X% share.

In Djibouti, leek imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (X% per year) and Namibia (X% per year).
