Hydrogen Market Size in Asia
The Asian hydrogen market fell to $X in 2023, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Hydrogen Production in Asia
In value terms, hydrogen production dropped slightly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by X%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia
In 2023, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of hydrogen, when their volume decreased by X% to X cubic meters. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2022, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, hydrogen exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2022, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of hydrogen, namely Malaysia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X cubic meters), generating a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest hydrogen supplier in Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a X% share.
In Malaysia, hydrogen exports expanded at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2022, and then declined modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Hydrogen Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2023, overseas purchases of hydrogen decreased by X% to X cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen imports shrank markedly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then declined notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Malaysia represented the main importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which accounted for X% of total imports. Israel (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X cubic meters), South Korea (X cubic meters) and Singapore (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. The following importers - Lao People's Democratic Republic (X cubic meters), Macao SAR (X cubic meters), Oman (X cubic meters), Kazakhstan (X cubic meters), Bangladesh (X cubic meters) and Kuwait (X cubic meters) - together made up X% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to hydrogen imports into Malaysia stood at X%. At the same time, Macao SAR (X%), Bangladesh (X%), South Korea (X%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X%), Kazakhstan (X%), Israel (X%) and Indonesia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Macao SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Kuwait and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Oman (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (X p.p.), South Korea (X p.p.), Macao SAR (X p.p.) and Bangladesh (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Indonesia (X p.p.), Singapore (X p.p.) and Oman (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest hydrogen importing markets in Asia were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports. Israel, South Korea, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Oman, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Bangladesh and Macao SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Macao SAR, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per cubic meter, declining by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per cubic meter), while Bangladesh ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
