The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, ethanol exports dropped to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2023, the Netherlands (X litres) represented the main exporter of ethyl alcohol, constituting X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hungary (X litres), Belgium (X litres), France (X litres), Germany (X litres) and Spain (X litres), together mixing up a X% share of total exports. Poland (X litres) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Poland (X%), Spain (X%), Hungary (X%), Germany (X%) and Belgium (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, France (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (X p.p.), Poland (X p.p.), Spain (X p.p.) and Hungary (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium and France saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per litre, remaining stable against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, ethanol export price increased by X% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre, leveling off in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in France ($X per litre) and Poland ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) and Germany ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

Ethanol imports rose slightly to X litres in 2023, increasing by X% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, ethanol imports reduced to $X in 2023. In general, imports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of ethyl alcohol, namely the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Sweden (X litres) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (X%). Italy (X litres), Denmark (X litres), Romania (X litres) and Poland (X litres) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by France (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

France, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per litre in 2023, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
