In 2023, after four years of growth, there was decline in the West African potato market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
Potato Production in Western Africa
In value terms, potato production rose rapidly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed strong growth. The average potato yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2023, falling by X% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by X%. Over the period under review, the potato yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2022, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2023, the total area harvested in terms of potatoes production in Western Africa shrank modestly to X ha, flattening at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production attained the maximum at X ha in 2022, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2023, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato exports declined sharply to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire was the key exporter of potatoes in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Niger (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (X%), Mauritania (X%) and Burkina Faso (X%). Gambia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at X%. At the same time, Gambia (X%), Ghana (X%), Niger (X%), Mali (X%) and Burkina Faso (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Mauritania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.), Niger (X p.p.), Mali (X p.p.), Burkina Faso (X p.p.), Gambia (X p.p.) and Ghana (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Mauritania (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

Gambia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, potato export price increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
