Cabbage Market Size in Eastern Europe

The East European cabbage market stood at $X in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cabbage Production in Eastern Europe

In 2023, the average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in Eastern Europe amounted to X tons per ha, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield showed mild growth. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the yield remained at a lower figure. After two years of growth, overseas shipments of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. Overall, exports saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports expanded sharply to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland was the key exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Belarus (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hungary (X%) and the Czech Republic (X%). Latvia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from Poland stood at X%. At the same time, Romania (X%), Belarus (X%) and Latvia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Hungary (X%) and the Czech Republic (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (X p.p.), Latvia (X p.p.) and Romania (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of the Czech Republic (X p.p.) and Poland (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (X% per year) and the Czech Republic (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, cabbage export price increased by X% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2023, cabbage imports in Eastern Europe contracted to X tons, declining by X% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports expanded slightly to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of cabbage and other brassicas in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Slovakia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Romania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage imports into Russia stood at X%.
