From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average garlic yield rose significantly to X tons per ha in 2023, with an increase of X% on the previous year's figure. The yield indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2023: its figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, garlic yield decreased by X% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of the garlic yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded decline in shipments abroad of garlic, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, garlic exports fell rapidly to $X in 2023. Overall, exports faced a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2023, Niger (X tons) was the largest exporter of garlic, achieving X% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Togo (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Togo (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Senegal (X%) and Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (X p.p.) and Togo (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.), Senegal (X p.p.) and Nigeria (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest garlic supplying countries in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Niger ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Niger, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Senegal represented the largest importer of garlic in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total imports. Guinea (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Nigeria (X%), Guinea (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Ghana (X%) and Mali (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Nigeria, Guinea and Burkina Faso increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
