Exports in ECOWAS

Lettuce and chicory exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2023, with an increase of X% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to lettuce and chicory exports from Senegal stood at X%. Cote d'Ivoire (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Liberia (X tons), together constituting a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - each resulted at an X% share of total imports.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Liberia (X%), Cabo Verde (X%), Ghana (X%), Togo (X%) and Mali (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Ghana and Cabo Verde increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (X% per year) and Nigeria (X% per year).
