Green Coffee Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American green coffee market dropped modestly to $X.2B in 2023, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X.2B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Green Coffee Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, green coffee production fell to $X.9B in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X.2B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of green coffee production was Brazil (X tons), accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Colombia (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Peru (X tons), with a X% share.

In Brazil, green coffee production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (X% per year) and Peru (X% per year).

The average green coffee yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2023, waning by X% against 2022. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, the total area harvested in terms of coffee (green) production in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at X ha, approximately reflecting 2022 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by X%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Green Coffee Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2023, shipments abroad of coffee (green) decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports fell to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the main exporter of coffee (green) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Colombia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Honduras (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. Nicaragua (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to green coffee exports from Brazil stood at X%. At the same time, Colombia (X%) and Nicaragua (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Honduras experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (X%), Guatemala (X%) and Costa Rica (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (X p.p.) and Colombia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Guatemala (X p.p.) and Peru (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest green coffee supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Honduras, with an X% share.

In Brazil, green coffee exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (X% per year) and Honduras (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Green Coffee Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2023, imports of coffee (green) in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded notably to X tons, picking up by X% on 2022 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports fell slightly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Colombia (X tons) represented the major importer of coffee (green), making up X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Chile (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and Mexico (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) - each accounted for a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to green coffee imports into Colombia stood at X%. At the same time, Brazil (X%), the Dominican Republic (X%), Costa Rica (X%), Mexico (X%) and Chile (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Brazil, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
