In 2023, the average cocoa bean yield in SADC reduced to X tons per ha, waning by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, cocoa bean exports stood at $X in 2023. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2023, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest exporter of cocoa beans in SADC, mixing up X% of total export.

From 2016 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cocoa bean imports contracted sharply to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Swaziland dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to cocoa bean imports into Swaziland stood at X%. At the same time, Madagascar (X%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Swaziland, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
