Lentil Production in Africa

Ethiopia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of lentil production, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, lentil production in Ethiopia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Tanzania (X tons), with a X% share.

In Ethiopia, lentil production decreased by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

The average lentil yield expanded rapidly to X tons per ha in 2023, growing by X% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the lentil yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the yield remained at a lower figure. In 2023, approx. X tons of lentils were exported in Africa; growing by X% against 2022 figures. In general, exports showed a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lentil exports surged to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Egypt was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), achieving a X% share of total exports. Sudan (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to lentil exports from Egypt stood at X%. At the same time, Tanzania (X%), Nigeria (X%), Cameroon (X%) and Uganda (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, rising by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, lentil export price increased by X% against 2019 indices. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
