Urea Market Size in Africa
For the fifth consecutive year, the African urea market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Urea Production in Africa
In value terms, urea production amounted to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded perceptible growth. From 2022 to 2023, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2023, shipments abroad of urea decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, urea exports dropped significantly to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2022, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together reaching X% of total export.
From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest urea supplying countries in Africa were Algeria ($X), Egypt ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2022, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Urea Imports
Imports in Africa
Urea imports fell slightly to X tons in 2023, which is down by X% against 2022 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, urea imports contracted to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importer of urea in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Benin (X%), Zimbabwe (X%), Sudan (X%), Morocco (X%), Mozambique (X%), Zambia (X%), Tanzania (X%), Burkina Faso (X%) and Ethiopia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Djibouti (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Zambia, Sudan, Benin, Morocco, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mozambique increased by X, X, X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest urea importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Sudan ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Djibouti, Tanzania, Morocco, Benin, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Benin, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, declining by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2022, and then declined in the following year.
