Moreover, tomato production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), threefold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Argentina (X% per year) and Colombia (X% per year).
The average tomato yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2023, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the tomato yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, approx. X tons of tomatoes were exported in MERCOSUR; with a decrease of X% compared with 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Argentina was the main exporter of tomatoes in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Peru (X tons) took an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (X%). Colombia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Argentina increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Brazil (X%), Peru (X%) and Colombia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Peru (X p.p.) and Brazil (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Argentina (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Peru ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2023, the amount of tomatoes imported in MERCOSUR plummeted to X tons, declining by X% against 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato imports shrank to $X in 2023. In general, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Paraguay was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - each recorded a X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato imports into Paraguay stood at X%. At the same time, Chile (X%) and Uruguay (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Argentina (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Chile and Argentina increased by X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
