The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2022, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, chick peas exports fell to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Tanzania (X tons) was the largest exporter of chick peas in SADC, creating X% of total export.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Tanzania increased by X percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) also remains the largest chick peas supplier in SADC.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports fell significantly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Mauritius (X tons) took an X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Madagascar (X%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Zimbabwe (X%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Madagascar and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Madagascar, Mauritius and Angola saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chick peas in SADC, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (X% per year) and Madagascar (X% per year).
