In 2023, the average sweet potato yield in Uganda was estimated at X tons per ha, remaining constant against 2022. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of the average sweet potato yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2023, the sweet potato harvested area in Uganda reduced to X ha, which is down by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by X%. In 2023, shipments abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2022, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports contracted markedly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2022, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Qatar (X tons) was the main destination for sweet potato exports from Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, sweet potato exports to Qatar exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), twofold. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Qatar stood at X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (X% per year) and Kenya (X% per year).
In value terms, Qatar ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for sweet potato exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Kenya, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sweet potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2023, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X kg after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sweet potato imports shrank modestly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The UK (X kg), Kenya (X kg) and South Africa (X kg) were the main suppliers of sweet potato imports to Uganda, together comprising X% of total imports.
